DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 25 (Benzene, Its Derivatives, and Condensed Benzenoid Compounds) Aryl isothiocyanates are prepd. by reaction of primary arylamines with CS2 in the presence of a tertiary amine. A mixt. of 2,6-(Me2CH)2C6H3NH2 (I) 1, CS2, 1.6, and EtOH 4.4 mol. equiv. was refluxed for 1.5 h to show I and 2,6-(Me2CH)2C6H3NCS (II) in an area % ratio of 5.3:1 by gas chromatog., and then CS2 (7 mol. equiv.) was added over an addnl. 55 h to give a I/II ratio of 1:1.7. Et3N (0.3 mol. equiv.) was added, reaction was continued for another 17 h (I/II = 1:8.9), 0.3 mol. equiv. addnl. Et3N was added, and the reaction was continued for 6.5 h to give a final ratio of 1:9.4. II was formed in 74% yield with essentially no other products. .
