Pb(IO3)2, Ba(IO3)2, or Sn(IO3)2 was studied as a function of soln. pH and concn. of lattice and nonlattice ions of similar charge and dimensions. The carrying process was due to surface adsorption by counter-ion exchange. In the presence of Pb ions, carrying was favored on Ba(IO3)2 and Sn(IO3)2, whereas a decrease was obsd. of the Pb(IO3)2 surface as Ba2+/Sn2+ ion concn. was increased in bulk. The effect may be due to anchoring of these nonlattice cations by lattice anions on the Pb(IO3)2 surface, decreasing the adsorption centers for phosphate. The pH effects may be due to hydrolysis of adsorption centers and pptn. of hydroxides. .
