DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) The title polyisocyanates are manufd. under moderate reaction conditions in the presence of a small amt. of catalyst and with the absence of side products by condensing diisocyanates in the presence of 3-methyl-1-phenylphospholine 1-oxide (I) [60031-54-1] as catalyst, interrupting the condensation by the addn. of FeCl3, BzCl [98-88-4], Me p-toluenesulfonate [80-48-8], or Me2SO4 [77-78-1], which stabilize the product, and by allowing the condensation to proceed until the NCO content is 25-35%. Thus, 0.9 g I was added to 30 kg melted diphenylmethane 4,4'-diisocyanate at 60° and heated 67 min at 80° to give polymer [25686-28-6] with NCO content 29.1%, with viscosity 31 cP (20°), and contg. carbodiimide groups, which was mixed with 0.9 g BzCl to give a product that had NCO content 27.6% and viscosity 142 cP (20°) after 6 mo storage at ambient temp.
