Sapon. of I and cyclization of the tetracarboxylic acid with Ac2O in o-C6H4Cl2 at 135° gave a dianhydride [26177-82-2]. Heating this anhydride 2.90, 4,4'-[isopropylidenebis(p-phenyleneoxy)]diphthalic anhydride 3.15, m-phenylenediamine 1.31, and phthalic anhydride 0.15, m-phenylenediamine 1.31, and phthalic anhydride 0.03 g in 35 mL m-cresol and 2.5 mL PhMe 4.5 h at 100-150° with H2O distn. and 1 h at 180° gave 6.6 g polyimide [98252-95-0] with intrinsic viscosity ( PhOH-C2H2Cl4, 30°) 0.56 dL/g and glass temp. 230°.
