- Comparison of the inflammatory reaction to three absorbable suture materials in rats. Carvalho, Paulo Sergio Perri de; Okamoto, Tetuo; Carvalho, Antonio Cesar Perri de; Rodrigues, Silvio de Oliveira (Fac. Odontol., UNESP, Aracatuba 16.100, Brazil). Rev. Cienc. Biomed., 6, 31-41 (Portuguese) 1985. CODEN: RCBIDV. ISSN: 0101-322X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) To study the tissue reaction to absorbable suture materials, deep sutures were made into the muscular flat of 24 albino rats with catgut, poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) [26009-03-0] and polyglactin 910 (Poly-vicryl) [26780-50-7]. Groups of 4 animals were sacrificed at days 1, 3, 6, 10, 20, and 40. The specimens were submitted to routine procedures and 4 mm sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Catgut provoked a more intense exudative phase. Earlier proliferation of fibroblasts was obsd. in specimens sutured with PGA and polyglactin 910. Catgut and polyglactin 910 were more quickly reabsorbed than PGA, but inflammatory reaction was more persistent around catgut. 26780-50-7 and 26124-68-5 are just another two chemicals used in this study. However, PGA and polyglactin 910 exhibited absorption with lesser inflammatory reaction. .

- Thermodynamics of glycolide polymerization. Lebedev, B. V.; Evstropov, A. A.; Kiparisova, E. G.; Lyudvig, E. B.; Sanina, G. S. (Inst. Khim., Gorkiy, USSR). Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR, 236(3), 669-72 [Phys. Chem.] (Russian) 1977. CODEN: DANKAS. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) The effect of temp. on heat capacities of glycolide (I) [502-97-6] and polyglycolide (II) [26009-03-0] was investigated at 13.8-550K, and the temps. and enthalpies of phys. transitions and of combustion of both compds. were detd. From the obtained data, thermodn. parameters of formation of I and II, thermodn. functions, and thermodn. parameters of polymn. of I at 0-550K were calcd. Polymn. of I was thermodn. allowed in the whole range of investigated temps. Free energy change favored polymn. of I to cryst. II rather than to glassy II. Changes in heat and entropy of polymn. depended little on temp. (due to small changes in heat capacity) except for temps. of phase transitions.
