DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) The combined action of fosfomycin Na salt (I) [26016-99-9] with penicillin G [61-33-6], ampicillin [69-53-4], and streptomycin [57-92-1] was investigated. A total of 11 Staphylococcus aureus and 10 Escherichia coli were included in these studies. The combination of I with penicillin G and streptomycin resulted in a synergistic effect. When S. aureus strains were tested, the combination of I with penicillin G was more frequently effective than the combination of I with streptomycin. The combination of I with ampicillin and streptomycin showed a similar synergistic effect on 7 of 10 E. coli strains. A combination of I with .beta.-lactam or aminoglycoside antibiotics may be used in clin. practice and such a procedure should prevent an emergence of I-resistant strains. .

The main decompn. processes were examd. and the thermogravimetric residues analyzed by IR and X-ray powder spectra, and were constituted by the resp. pyrophosphates, which are thermally very stable. Evaluation of the purity of the initial compd. was performed on these residues, based on the comparison between the theor. and the exptl. Na and Ca percentages found in the final residue. Satisfactory values of precision (relative std. deviation <1%) and accuracy (<1%) were obtained. In the case of di-Na fosfomycin, succinic acid [110-15-6] had to be added, to obtain reliable results.
