- The dipole moment and helium(I) photoelectron spectroscopic study of the conformations of chalcanthrenes. Distefano, Giuseppe; Galasso, Vinicio; Irgolic, Kurt J.; Pappalardo, Giuseppe C. (Ist. Composti Carbonio Contenenti Eteroatomi, CNR, Bologna, Italy). J. Chem. Soc., Perkin Trans. Some commonly used reagents like 262-30-6 and 262-12-4 are used in this experiment. 2, (8), 1109-12 (English) 1983. CODEN: JCPKBH. ISSN: 0300-9580. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 22 (Physical Organic Chemistry) Section cross-reference(s): 28 The soln. and gas-phase conformations of the chalcanthrenes [I; X = O (II), S (III), Se (IV), Te (V)] were studied using the dipole moments of III-V in C6H6 at 25° and the He(I) photoelectron spectra of II-V. The angles of fold along the X-X axis are 163.8°, 142.4°, 139.0°, and 124.6° for II-V, resp. These are larger than the analogous solid state values, probably due to butterfly motions of these mols. The photoelectron spectra show six p-bands and one s-band in the low ionization region; the empirical assignment of these bands is supported by SCF-PPP MO calcns. The trends in the av. values of the 1st 2 ionization energies and their energy differences show that I have a folded conformation in the gas phase also. .
