CLASS: IC: C08B005-14. APPLICATION: JP 76-47546 26 Apr 1976. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 43 (Cellulose, Lignin, Paper, and Other Wood Products) Cellulose sulfate (I) [9032-43-3] useful as a thickening agent was prepd. by treating cellulose [9004-34-6] with base-SO3 complexes in a dispersion medium and filtering and the filtrate was mixed with pyridine-sulfuric acid salt (II) [543-54-4], Et3N-H2SO4 salt [2399-73-7], picoline-sulfuric acid salt [66208-31-9], or lutidine-sulfuric acid salt [66255-35-4] and recycle as a dispersion medium to prep. I having good transparency, color, and thickening effect. Thus, 750 g pulp sheet was heated in 840 g pyridine [110-86-1] at 80° for 4 h, cooled, mixed with 6000 g pyridine and 1325 g pyridine-sulfur trioxide complex (III) [26412-87-3], heated at 80° for 5 h, and filtered to give I and a filtrate, and 62.5 g pulp sheet was heated in 70 g pyridine at 80° for 4 h, mixed with 500 g filtrate contg. 68.3 g II and 110.4 g III, heated at 80° for 5 h, and filtered to prep. I.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 43 (Cellulose, Lignin, Paper, and Other Wood Products) Cellulose sulfate Na salt (I) [9005-22-5] having high degree of sulfation and useful as a thickening agent was prepd. by sulfating cellulose [9004-34-6] with pyridine-sulfur trioxide complex [26412-87-3] or a similar complex in the presence of pyridine sulfate (II) [34114-35-7] or a similar salt. Thus, 150 g pyridine contg. 4.4 g H2SO4 was mixed with 11.4 g SO3 at <0.degree., and 10 g dissolving pulp (treated in 300g boling water for 2 h and washed with pyridine) was added to the above mixt., heated at 80.degree. for 4 h, sped. to remove pyridine, and heated in 100 g MeOH contg. 6.1 g NaOH at 50.degree. for 2 h to prep. 22.2 g I having degree of sulfation 1.66, compared with 1.22 for I prepd. in the absence of II. .
