Effect of sodium azide on some elements in a biocenosis
Effect of sodium azide on some elements in a biocenosis. Baluk, Antoni; Trojanowski, Henryk (Inst. Ochr., Roslin, Pol.). Pr. Nauk. Inst. Ochr. Rosl., 25(2), 171-9 (Polish) 1983. CODEN: PNORA5. ISSN: 0554-8004. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Section cross-reference(s): 4, 19 Incorporation of 500 L 20% Nemazyd (NaN3) [26628-22-8]/ha 5 wk before potato planting did not affect the crop, but inhibited nitrification for 3 wk. NaN3 decreased the no. of Collembola which returned to normal in Aug. Onychiurus armatus And Tullbergia krausbaueri, which together made up 43% of Collembola, were the most resistant. NaN3 rapidly decreased Acarina by 80%. Within 2-3 mo Acarina disappeared completely and slightly recovered in the 2nd half of Aug.
Testing of known carcinogens and noncarcinogens for their ability to induce unscheduled DNA synthesis in HeLa cells
Testing of known carcinogens and noncarcinogens for their ability to induce unscheduled DNA synthesis in HeLa cells. Martin, Carl N.; McDermid, Anne C.; Garner, R. Colin (Cancer Res. Unit, Univ. York, Heslington/York, Engl.). Cancer Res., 38(8), 2621-7 (English) 1978. CODEN: CNREA8. ISSN: 0008-5472. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) The ability of 51 compds. of known carcinogenic potential to induce 'unscheduled DNA synthesis' in HeLa cells was tested in the presence or absence of a rat liver mixed-function oxidase [9040-60-2] prepn. Chemicals tested included those giving erroneous results in bacterial mutagenicity assays as well as representative compds. from various classes of chem. carcinogens including nitrosamines, polycyclic arom. hydrocarbons, arom. amines, and mycotoxins. Of the compds. assayed, all noncarcinogens failed to induce DNA repair; of 38 compds. of demonstrated carcinogenicity 34 were active; safrole [94-59-7], N-propyl-N-nitrosourea [816-57-9], aflatoxin B2 [7220-81-7] and N-butyl-N-nitrosourea [869-01-2] were, however, inactive. Six compds. for which carcinogenicity data are incomplete were active, namely, 4-nitro-o-phenylenediamine [99-56-9], 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine [5307-14-2], formaldehyde [50-00-0], 2,2'-dichlorobenzidine [84-68-4], 3,3',5,5'-tetrafluorobenzidine [42794-87-6], and 3,3',5,5'-tetrachlorobenzidine [41687-08-5]. Three carcinogens that are weakly active or inactive in bacterial mutagenicity assays, i.e., urethane [51-79-6], N-dimethyl-p-aminoazobenzene [60-11-7], and diethylstilbestrol [56-53-1] were active in this assay. The bacterial mutagens sodium azide [26628-22-8] and 9-aminoacridine [90-45-9] were both inactive. The use of this assay in a tier scheme for the short-term testing of potential chem. carcinogens is discussed.
