Determination of latex particle size from polymerization rates
Determination of latex particle size from polymerization rates. Force, Carlton G. (Charleston Res. Cent., Westvaco Corp., North Charleston, S. C., USA). J. Coated Fabr., 7(3), 223-32 (English) 1978. CODEN: JCTFAL. ISSN: 0093-4658. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) Final latex particle size can be calcd. during polymn. from the percent conversion at the crit. micelle concn. of the emulsifier, i.e., the point at which the faster early-stage polymn. rate intersects with the slower late-stage polymn. rate. This provides a means for particle size control. The effect of several variables on latex particle size was evaluated in a system for polybutadiene [9003-17-2] latex prepn. in the presence of a K oleate [143-18-0] soap and FeSO4 [7720-78-7]-EDTA.4Na [64-02-8]-Na sulfoxylate [149-44-0]-p-menthane hydroperoxide [26762-92-5] catalyst system. Increasing the concn. of the redox component in the initiator led to increased particle size, whereas increasing the peroxide component or adding other agents capable of decompg. to free radicals led to reduced particle size. Decreasing the emulsifier concn. led to increased particle size.
Polymerization of conjugated dienes
Polymerization of conjugated dienes. Miletto, Andre; Teitgen, Jean (Zjednoczenie Przemyslu Rafineryjnego i Petrochemicznego "Petrochemia", Pol.). Pol. PL 89767 30 Jun 1977, 4 pp. (Polish). (Poland). CODEN: POXXA7. CLASS: IC: C08D001-09. APPLICATION: PL 68-130092 16 Nov 1968. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 38 (Elastomers, Including Natural Rubber) Conjugated dienes are polymd. or copolymd. in an aq. emulsion with continuous addn. of chain-transfer agents and free-radical catalysts to attain 70-90% conversion of monomers. The rate of conversion is not slower than the av. rate for processes reaching 60% conversion. Thus, the polymn. is carried out in the presence of 0.024-0.048% FeSO4.7H2O, 0.07-0.15% p-menthane hydroperoxide [26762-92-5], and 0.2-0.3% tert-dodecyl mercaptan [25103-58-6], which are continuously introduced into the reaction mixt.
