Addn. of 10% monoethanolamine (I) [141-43-5] soln. in NaOH inhibited the oxidative degrdn. of dehydrodiisoeugenol (II) [2680-81-1], dehydrodihydrodiisoeugenol (III) [4731-87-7], or p-hydroxyphenyl-1-propanone .beta.-guaiacyl ether (IV) [64608-91-9] (lignin model compds.) during alk. cooking. The degree of conversion of lignin [9005-53-2] to low-mol.-wt. monomers and dimers increased only by .apprx.5% on addn. of I during alk. cooking. The changes occurring in the lignin model compds. were confirmed by UV spectroscopy.

In all, 28 carboxylic acids were identified. The ammoxidn. of all I model compds. gave glycolic acid [79-14-1], oxalic acid [144-62-7], and malonic acid [141-82-2].In this experiment, several chemicals are used like 110-15-6 and 110-94-1 A probable ammoxidn. mechanism of I model compds. was proposed. .
