DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) Biocompatible, biodegradable antithrombogenic prosthetics based on poly(L-lactic acid) [26811-96-1] or poly(DL-lactic acid) [31587-11-8] and polyester or polyether urethane polymers can be prepd. with variable compn. and porosity for different uses. The polymers can be prepd. in layers to modify mech. properties, and can be modelled with mandrels by dipping. For prepn. of arteries, arteriovenous shunts, or cardiopulmonary bypass prosthetics the material should contain 70-85% polyether urethane; for veins with a diam. of 1.5-10 mm 20-40% polyester urethane is recommended; for tracheal prosthetics (diam. 7-25 mm), 50-60% of a polyether or polyester urethane is best; artificial skin, 50-500 mm2, contains 50-80% polyester urethane. Procedures for prepg. the prosthetics by forming on a PTFE-coated mandrel are described. .
Biodegradable ureteral grafts in dogs
Biodegradable ureteral grafts in dogs. Bergman, Stuart; Javadpour, Nasser; Wade, Clarence; Terrill, Richard (Natl. Cancer Inst., NIH, Bethesda, Md., USA). Invest. Urol., 16(1), 48-9 (English) 1978. CODEN: INURAQ. ISSN: 0021-0005. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) In 6 dogs, a segment of the right ureter was replaced by a tubular segment of poly [L(-) lactic acid] [26811-96-1], a new absorbable biomaterial, with the hope that the foreign body would be absorbed or dissolved after a new mucosally lined channel had formed. The dogs were followed with excretory urograms, blood urea nitrogens, and serum creatinines. Postoperatively, 4 of the 6 dogs had deteriorating or total loss of function of the right kidney by 8 mos attributable to obstruction of the ureter by disintegrating implant.
