I, II, III and IV prolonged the life span of mice with lymphocyte leukemia, whereas V, VI and VII were ineffective. In clin. tests, III appeared to be effective in treating acute and chronic myelocytic leukemia in human subjects.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 64 (Pharmaceutical Analysis) 3S,4S,5R,2'R- (I) [79951-38-5] and 3S,4S,5R,2'S-homoharringtonine (II) [26833-87-4] were detd. by TLC-densitometry. A 3-mg sample was dissolved in EtOH and an aliquot was chromatographed on a silica gel G plate by using CHCl3-MeOH(4:1) as the mobile phase. Spots were visualized with modified Dragendorff reagent and subjected to densitometry. The calibration plot was linear to 9 mg I. Reproducibility with a relative std. deviation of 3.56% (I) and 3.10% (II) was obsd. The method was rapid, sensitive, and simple.
