DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) S-(+)-2,4-diaminobutyric acid [1758-80-1] was at least 20 times more potent than R-(-)-2,4-diaminobutyric acid [26908-94-1] as an inhibitor of the Na-dependent uptake of GABA [56-12-2] in rat brain slices. Both isomers were equipotent inhibitors of Na-independent binding of GABA to membranes from rat brain. The latter effect may account for the neurotoxicity obsd. in rats after intracisternal injection of either isomer.
