DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) The nature of the propagation sites in the anionic polymn. of methoxypolyethylene glycol methacrylate [26915-72-0] in the presence of Li counterion was studied by IR spectra of the model compds., Li derivs. of isobutyric acid esters, Me2CLiCO2(CH2CH2O)nMe (n = 1-4), and 2,2,4-trimethylglutaric acid esters. The wavelength of the absorption band of lithioisobutyrate is independent of the nature of the solvent. This was explained by intramol. solvation of Li+ by the polyether alc. residue. The spectra of the metalated trimethylglutarates give evidence of concurrent solvation of Li+ by the alkoxycarbonyl group in the g-position and the alc. residue of the ester group bound to the metalated C atom. When the no. of ethylene oxide units in the polyether chain is increased, the coordination of Li+ to it prevails over the interaction with the g-alkoxycarbonyl group. .
