The recommended reaction is aq. alk. hydrolysis of CS to o-chlorobenzaldehyde (I) [89-98-5]. In the system developed, the reaction goes rapidly to give easily sepd., high-purity I with yields of 70-5%.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Report CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) The toxicity of pharmacol. of .alpha.-chloroacetophenone (CN) [532-27-4] and O-chlorobenzylidenemalonitrile (CS) [2698-41-1] in test animals are discribed and compared and the data are extrapolated to humans. No carcinogenicity could be found for either CN or CS. CN was embryotoxic, but CS was not. Both caused allergic sensitization. CS was not damaging to skin, eye, or the respiratory system; it has a lower effective dose value, a higher LD value, and a larger safety margin than CN.
