DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 19 (Fertilizers, Soils, and Plant Nutrition) The effect on soil urease [9002-13-5] activity of 5 aminocresols, at concns. of 5-100 mg/g soil, was examd. in the lab. Two compds., 4-amino-o-cresol [2835-96-3] and 4-amino-m-cresol [2835-99-6], significantly inhibited urease activity. The position of the amino group was important as only th 4-amino position gave effective inhibition. The efficacy of 4-amino-o-cresol was compared with that of phenylphosphorodiamidate (PPDA), a known inhibitor, in 3 U.K. soils. At 50 mg/g soil 4-amino-o-cresol was as inhibitory as an equiv. concn. of PPDA in a soil with low urease activity, but was less inhibitory in 2 soils with high urease activity. Their limited efficacy suggests there is little com. potential for aminocresols as urease inhibitors.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 61 (Water) Section cross-reference(s): 80 The recovery from water of aminocarb (I) [2032-59-9] and several of its derivs. using Amberlite XAD resins and subsequent anal. by gas chromatog. using a N-P detector showed that I and 3 derivs. (4-dimethylamino-3-methylphenol (II) [14143-25-0], 4-(N-methyl-N-formylamino)-3-methylphenol methylcarbamate (III) [10233-98-4] and 4-(formylamino)-3-methylphenol [60463-08-3]) may be extd. from water at pH 7.0 using Amberlite XAD-4 [37380-42-0] with >80% recovery. A 4th deriv. 4-(formylamino)-3-methylphenol methylcarbamate (IV) [10234-35-2], was recovered ~70%. The effectiveness of other resins such as Amberlite XAD-2 [9060-05-3] and 7 [37380-43-1] is more limited, although each may be used for the extn. of I from water. The amphoteric deriv., 4-amino-3-methylphenol [2835-99-6], may be recovered with XAD-7, but the column must be eluted with MeOH. 4-(Methylamino)-3-methylphenol methylcarbamate [10233-96-2] could not be recovered successfully. Expts. with environmental waters showed that the recovers of I, II, III, and IV were good. .
