DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 36 (Physical Properties of Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 73 Nylon 6 [25038-54-4], nylon 8 [25035-02-3], nylon 66 [32131-17-2], nylon 69 [28757-63-3], and nylon 66(a6) (I) [97950-78-2] were studied with secondary ion mass spectrometry and a time-of-flight mass analyzer. Fragmentation of the backbone producing ions smaller than one monomer unit and attachment of Ag+ to low mass fragments were obsd. Protonation and cationization of the repeat unit with Ag+, K+, and Na+ produced high mass ions characteristic of the polymer and the repeat unit sequence in the polymer chain. Ag- and Na-cationized ions as large as 24 monomer units for nylon 6 and as high as m/z ~ 3500 for I were detected.

Qual. identical plasticization of aliph. polyamides by water was obsd. A method was presented for calcn. of the diffusion coeff. of water in polyamides.
