The work is important for the life of air cathodes used in fuel cells or metal-air batteries. The type of C support used in pyrolyzed catalysts modifies their properties in H2SO4. The type of C support influences both the catalytic activity for O redn. and their long-term stability. The obsd. effects are due to interactions between the C support and the pyrolysis products of Co-TMeOPP during heat treatment.

Activated C was promoted with 5-10% org. complexes of Co and Teflon was used as the binder. The complexes used were: Co phthalocyanine [3317-67-7], Co tetraphenylporphine [14172-90-8], Co tetrabenzoporphine [58482-09-0], and Co tetra(p-methoxyphenyl)porphine [28903-71-1]. Heat treatment of the C-complex mixts. in an inert gas at 800-900° improves the catalyst stability. O electrodes with these catalysts operated in H2SO4 for several thousand h without deterioration.
