The esters are a mixt. of triacrylates of trimethylolpropane-ethylene oxide reaction products with av. degree of oxyethylation 2.5-4 and distribution mono- 4-5, di- 14-16, tri- 20-30, tetra- 20-30, penta- 16-18, and hexaoxyethylation 6-8%. Thus, 402 g trimethylolpropane contg. 1 g MeONa was treated with 495 g ethylene oxide at 100° to give a colorless product with OH no. 555, Hoeppler viscosity 500 cP at 20°, and product distribution mono- 4, di- 14, tri- 29, tetra- 30, penta- 16, and hexaoxyethylation 6%. Then 300 g product (degree of oxyethylation 3.75) in 50 mL toluene was treated with 216 g acrylic acid in the presence of 2.5 g p-toluenesulfonic acid to give an oxyethylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (I) [28961-43-5] with OH no. 13 and Hoeppler viscosity 102 cP. A UV-curable mixt. of I, acrylic acid-bisphenol A diglycidyl ether copolymer [52985-33-8], and a-cyanoethylbenzoin Et ether had a lower viscosity and better reactivity on exposure to UV irradn. than similar compns. contg. conventional thinners.
