DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 43 (Cellulose, Lignin, Paper, and Other Wood Products) The N-substituted mono- and diamides of resin acids were obtained in 88.5-91.9% yields by adding 4.6-10.5 g PhNCO [103-71-9], m-ClC6H4NCO [2909-38-8], TDI [26471-62-5], or MDI [101-68-8] over 0.5-2.0 h at 150-250° to 11.3-23.4 g gum rosin, disproportionated rosin, or abietic acid [514-10-3] and maintaining this temp. for addnl. 0.5-4.0 h. The products had m.p. 70-230° and mol. wt. 388-900.

The reaction rate const. depended on the concn. of OH groups of the oligomer, with oligobutadienes having the smallest content of terminal OH groups and quite inactive in uncatalyzed reactions, became most reactive in the presence of II. Thus, p-bound OH groups became more reactive than the self-assocd. groups in the presence of II. II increased the activation energy and entropy of reaction of I with the self-assocd. OH groups. II also decreased the steric hindrance in the formation of intermediates from I and oligobutadienes. The reaction rate consts. of I with the oligobutadienes were detd.
