CODEN: JCLIDR. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 36 (Physical Properties of Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 47, 66 The use of microcolumns in size-exclusion high-performance liq. chromatog. (HPLC) reduced the consumption of the stationary and mobile phases which led to high resoln. and low cost. The prepn. of microcolumns involved using polyimide-coated fused silica tubing (inside diam. 0.33 mm, length 50 cm) and polysytyrene [9003-53-6] gels having av. particle size 5 or 6 m as packing materials. Microcolumn size-exclusion HPLC sepn. of Epikote 828 [25068-38-6] epoxy resin resulted in identification of various byproducts. Eleven peaks due to 4 main products and 7 byproducts were obsd. in the chromatograms of these resins. The byproducts were identified as compds. contg. OH groups at one or both ends. The sepn. of phenolic resin prepolymers such as novolaks and resols produced a no. of identifiable compds. such as phenol (I) [108-95-2], 2,2'-diphenylolmethane [2467-02-9], 4,4'-diphenylolmethane [620-92-8], and tri- and tetra-nuclei components in novolaks and I, 2-methylolphenol [90-01-7], 4-methylolphenol [623-05-2], 2,6-dimethylolphenol [2937-59-9], 2,4-dimethylolphenol [2937-60-2], and 2,4,6-trimethylolphenol [2937-61-3] in resole resins.
