The interaction of Acridine Orange with poly(S-carboxymethyl-L-cysteine). Imae, Toyoko; Ikeda, Shoichi (Fac. Sci., Nagoya Univ., Nagoya, Japan). Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn., 50(11), 2877-80 (English) 1977. CODEN: BCSJA8. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 40 (Dyes, Fluorescent Whitening Agents, and Photosensitizers) The interaction of Acridine Orange (I) [65-61-2] with poly(S-carboxymethyl-L-cysteine) (II) [29433-95-2] detd. by the soly. behavior, absorption spectra, and CD of the mixt. indicates that the binding of I with II is mainly caused by electrostatic effects, and the soly. of the mixt. is interpreted by considering the ionization of II and the binding of I to II. When I is added to an aq. soln. of II, the mixt. is homogeneous at higher pH, but pptn. takes place at lower pH; the threshold pH varies from 3.5-6, depending on the mixing ratios. For [II]/[I] <1, the mixt. is homogeneous at pH between 4 and 2, when no salt is added. Various types of CD are induced for the homogeneous solns., which are characteristic of bound I species on II and the structure of I-II complex.
