DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 51 (Fossil Fuels, Derivatives, and Related Products) An oil-sol. rust inhibitor for lubricating oils is prepd. by treating a colloidal dispersion of an alkali or alk. earth metal compd. in oil with a C8-20 dicarboxylic acid or anhydride and a monohydric phenol or a monohydric alc. A preferred colloidal dispersion comprises the overbased additives, e.g., overbased og. sulfonates or overbased phenates. The dicarboxylic acid or anhydride is preferably aliphatic. For example, a 70% soln. in oil of dodecenylsuccinic acid [29658-97-7] was added to a mixt. of nonylphenol [25154-52-3] and paraffin oil at .apprx.100.degree., and the mixt. was stirred until the evolution of CO2 ceased. The oil-sol. fluid produced had a total base no. of 125 and had antirust and detergent properties in lubricating oils.
