II [63148-17-4] and III (R = Et or Ph), resp. II and III were added to photohardenable resins. II and III did not hinder the photohardening, and the hardened resin was heated at 130.degree. to decomp. II and III and regenerate the hydroxybenzene derivs. which were effective as light stabilizers. Thus, I 7.64, EtNCO 2.7, triethylenediamine 0.05, and CH2Cl2 10 parts were mixed at 25.degree. for 100 h to prep. 4.4 parts II. A photohardenable poly(methyl methacrylate) [9011-14-7]-methyl methacrylate compn. contg. 3% II was hardened in UV light and heated at 130.degree. for 3 h to decomp. II and regenerate I as a light stabilizer.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) A multitechnique approach was used to det. the depth profile of a small mol. in a polymeric matrix as a function of heating. The mol., 2-hydroxy-4-(dodecyloxy)-benzophenone [2985-59-3], was solubilized in a poly(Et methacrylate) [9003-42-3]-butoxyethanol carrier and applied as a thin film (0.2 m thick) to the surface of a bisphenol A polycarbonate sheet. Upon heating, the partition of this mol. between the polymethacrylate and the polycarbonate was detd. by transmission UV absorption spectroscopy after selective chem. etching. IR attenuated total reflectance sampling showed the disappearance of the substituted benzophenone from a surface layer ca. 0.3-0.4 m thick. Demonstrated for the 1st time, the deuterium depth profile obtained by secondary ion mass spectrometry by using a deuterated analog clearly shows the diffusion of this mol. into the polycarbonate interior to a depth of ca. 3 m. Direct transmission IR analyses of serially cut microtome slices confirm these observations.
