DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) The artificial electron donor system phenazine methosulfate (I) [299-11-6]-ascorbate [50-81-7] inhibited active transport of solutes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa irresp. of whether the active transport systems were shock sensitive or shock resistant. N,N,N',N'-tetramethylphenylenediamine-2HCl [637-01-4] could be substituted for I but a higher concn. was required. I-ascorbate also inhibited active transport in several other bacterial species with the exception of Escherichia coli and of a nonpigmented strain of Serratia marcescens. The apparent Km of glucose [50-99-7] active transport in untreated cells of P. aeruginosa was 40 mM, whereas the Km of glucose transport in cells incubated with I-ascorbate was 25 mM, and I-ascorbate had no effect on the efflux of accumulated glucose. Facilitated diffusion may result on exposure of the cells to I-ascorbate. Apparently, I-ascorbate has an uncoupler-like effect on cells of P. aeruginosa.
