DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) In myocardial mitochondrial prepns. from rats injected with the b-blocker propranolol [525-66-6], both phosphorylative and nonphosphorylative respiration were accelerated in the presence of caprylate and palmitoylcarnitine. Novodrin [299-95-6], however, increased free oxidn., lowering ATP levels in myocytes. Previous injection of propranolol did not fully prevent the metabolic effects of novodrin. Data are given regarding the stages of respiration affected by the drugs.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Mammalian Hormones) Novodrin [299-95-6]-induced cardiac necrosis in rabbits was assocd. with a 5.7-fold increase in creatine phosphokinase [9001-15-4], a 2.9-fold increase in aspartate aminotransferase [9000-97-9], a 1.5-fold increase in alanine aminotransferase [9000-86-6], hypomagnesemia, and an increase in plasma osmolarity. Administration of [D-Ala2,Leu5,Arg6]enkephalin [81733-79-1] (10 mg/kg, i.v.) normalized all of these parameters. Administration of the leucine-enkephalin deriv. to rats had no effect on cAMP [60-92-4] or cGMP [7665-99-8] levels in myocardium, but it antagonized the increases induced by novodrin. The enkephalin deriv. also antagonized the increase in myocardial cAMP produced by diaphylline [317-34-0], a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. Thus, enkephalins apparently influence the adrenergic system of myocardium via an effect on the cyclic nucleotides.
