DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) The metabolic effects of infusing an amino acid soln. with either a 24% soln. of glucose or a 24% soln. of glucose and fructose were investigated in 10 patients who underwent elective surgery for colorectal carcinoma. All measured biochem. indexes and the plasma venous concns. of individual amino acids were similar during the infusion of glucose and the mixt. of glucose and fructose. Significant increases in the serum concns. of urea, creatinine, and glucose and significant decreases in the serum concns. of uric acid and bilirubin were obsd. during infusion of both energy substrates. A persistent increase in the plasma venous concns. of all amino acids were obsd. throughout the period of i.v. feeding. Glycosuria occurred during the infusion of both energy substrates, but the urinary loss of glucose during the infusion of glucose was significantly greater than that during the infusion of glucose and fructose. At these rates of infusion, fructose had no advantages or disadvantages over glucose as a source of non-protein energy during i.v. feeding in this type of patient.

Metabolic inhibitors that derange energy transfer reactions greatly reduced fructose uptake. This indicates that fructose uptake may be by active transport. The sensitivity of fructose uptake to p-chloromercuribenzoate, a sulfhydryl group inhibitor, indicated the activity of an enzyme-like carrier.
