II 400, and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol 15 g were heated 3 h at 50.degree., heated 15 h at 80.degree., and stripped of water at 50-60.degree. under reduced pressure, giving a 93% yield of [2-hydroxy-3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl]trimethylammonium chloride (I; R = Me)(IV) [13052-11-4]. A soln. of IV 3.5, K2S2O8 0.01, and 50% aq. DMSO 5 parts was heated 24 h at 60.degree., giving a 53% yield of poly[[2-hydroxy-3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl]trimethylammonium chloride] [25609-94-3] with intrinsic viscosity 1.5 dl/g, which was useful as a filler retention aid in paper manuf.
