DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Hormone Pharmacology) Administration of spermine-4HCl (I) [306-67-2] (30 mg base/kg, i.p.) or spermidine-3HCl (II) [334-50-9] (100 mg base/kg, i.p.) to rats did not alter brain levels of acetylcholine [51-84-3], noradrenaline [51-41-2], dopamine [51-61-6], 5-hydroxytryptamine [50-67-9], or GABA [56-12-2]. Although I and II increased blood histamine (III) [51-45-6] levels from 0.37 to 0.72 and 2.66 nmol/mL resp., correction for the contribution of blood III to brain III content showed that brain III levels were not altered. The effects of I and II on the central nervous system were mediated directly.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Hormone Pharmacology) Iontophoretic application of spermine-4HCl (I) [306-67-2] and spermidine-3HCl (II) [334-50-9] to neurons from the brain stem of decerebrate cats and anesthetized rats resulted in depression of spontaneous activity in 35%, excitatory effects in 18%, and the remainder were unaffected. The response to I was always in the same direction as that to II although the relative magnitude of the effects varied. I and II may participate in processes which influence neuronal activity.
