DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 65, 78 The ESR, H1 NMR, and chem. ionization mass spectra of Ziegler-Natta catalysts for the polymn. of isoprene, formed by reaction of alkylaluminum with (tert-BuO)4Ti [3087-39-6] or (tert-BuO)4V [10585-27-0] in C6H6 or PhMe, revealed the existence of 7 kinds of Ti(III) complexes and several kinds of V(III) complexes. The alkoxide was monomeric in C6H6 soln. and reduced by the alkylaluminum to form a bivalent complex via trivalent complexes. The final redn. product of (tert-BuO)4V was bis(di-.mu.-alkyl-dialkylaluminum)vanadium (II), which had no catalytic activity. In the trivalent state, the catalytic system caused 5 kinds of polymn. of isoprene. 21643-36-7 and 6167-45-9 are also in the experiment. The coordination structure of 7 kinds of Ti(III) complexes was detd. by comparing the obsd. g-values with the calcd. ones. The 1,4-polymn. of isoprene is likely initiated by tris[di-.mu.-tert-butoxo-dialkyltitanium (III)]aluminum or the corresponding V(III) complex. The catalyst has a tetranuclear structure suitable for bidentate coordination of isoprene. A polymn. mechamism of isoprene in the presence of the Ziegler-Natta catalysts was proposed. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) (BuO)4Ti [5593-70-4] and (tert-BuO)4Ti [3087-39-6] (model compds. of Ti-contg. oligoesters) acted as weak inhibitors and chain transfer agents in the radical polymn. of Bu methacrylate [97-88-1]. Both Ti compds. accelerated the decompn. of hydroperoxides and ketone peroxides by .apprx.1000 fold, and (BuO)4Ti accelerated the decompn. of acyl peroxides by 50-100 fold. Simultaneous lowering of the initiation effectiveness by 1 order of magnitude resulted in a rapid exhaustion of the initiator and termination of the polymn. at low monomer conversion. Polymn. initiation by AIBN [78-67-1] or dialkyl peroxides was not affected by the presence of (BuO)4Ti or (tert-BuO)4Ti.
