DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) The title resins are prepd. by mixing 100 parts alicyclic epoxy compd. contg. 1,2-epoxy groups with 5-50 parts p-tert-butylphenyl glycidyl ether (I) [3101-60-8], mixing 100 parts of the 1st mixt. with 0.1-10 parts linear bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin epoxy resin (II) [25068-38-6] (d.p. = 200-1000), mixing 100 parts of the second mixt. with 0.01-1.0 part Zn octanoate (III) [557-09-5], heating the last mixt. at 100-150° for 10-120 min and cooling, and adding a liq. cyclic acid anhydride. The compns. have excellent mech. and elec. properties and long pot life. Thus, 80 parts 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl 3,4-epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate [2386-87-0] was mixed with 20 parts I, then mixed with 1.0 parts II, the mixt. was heated at 130° for 2 h, mixed with 0.2 part III, heated to 120° for 30 min, cooled to 25°, and mixed with 100 parts methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride [26590-20-5] to obtain an epoxy resin which changed in viscosity from 150-260 cP in 30 days and to 500 cP in >3 mo at 25° and 35% relative humidity and cured at 150° for 16 h to give bending strength 11.0 kg/mm2 (25°) and adhesive strength (JIS C2103) 17.5 kg.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Low-viscosity impregnants with good pot life, for elec. coils wound with a porous insulation layer, were prepd. by heating 100 parts -50 mixt. of an epoxy resin contg. 32 epoxide groups and p-tert-butylphenyl glycidyl ether (I) [3101-60-8] with 0.01-1.0 part Zn octanoate, followed by compounding with a cyclic acid anhydride. Thus, CY 179 [25085-98-7] epoxy resin 85, I 15, and Zn octanoate 0.1 part were heated at 120° for 30 min, cooled to 25°, and mixed with 99.6 parts HN 2200 [38497-16-4] to give an impregnant with viscosity (25°) 160 cP, pot life (25°) 133 days, compared with 120 and 14, resp., for a control prepd. without the heat treatment. An elec. coil wound with a glass cloth-backed mica tape and then a polyester tape (protective) was vacuum-impregnated with the heat-treated impregnant and cured at 155° for 12 h to obtain a 3 mm-thick insulation with initial dielec. tangent 0.02% and breakdown voltage 105 kV, compared with 0.50 and 80, resp., for a control using the above control impregnant.
