DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) In newborn rats, the brain contents of N-acetyl-L-aspartate [997-55-7], N-acetyl-L-glutamate [1188-37-0], and N-acetyl-L-aspartyl-L-glutamate [3106-85-2] were 0.666, 0.217, and 0.074 mmol/g (wet tissue); these compds. increased gradually to reach 5.185, 0.769, and 1.059 mmol/g after 30 days. Exposure of rats at 1, 7, 14, 21, or 30 days of age to hyperoxic conditions (3.25 atm for 60 min) decreased the brain contents of all 3 components. The decrease was most pronounced at 14-30 days of age.

- Ontogenesis of N-acetyl-aspartate and N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamate in rat brain. Koller, K. J.; Coyle, J. T. (Sch. Med., Johns Hopkins Univ., Baltimore, MD 21205, USA). Dev. Brain Res., 15(1), 137-40 (English) 1984. CODEN: DBRRDB. ISSN: 0165-3806. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Mammalian Hormones) The levels of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) [997-55-7] and N-acetylaspartylglutamate (NAAG) [3106-85-2] were measured in several regions and in whole brain of rats from 15 days of gestation (DG) to adulthood with an isocratic HPLC method. The levels of NAAG in whole brain increased 3-fold between 15 DG and birth, which was 90% of the adult level. Whereas the levels of NAAG in spinal cord increased from 2 days to 4 wk after birth, in forebrain regions, the levels increased 2-3-fold between 2 and 8 days after birth and then declined substantially to adult levels. In contrast, in whole brain and in the several regions examd. after birth, the levels of NAA rose steadily from 15 DG to adulthood with a 3-fold increase in whole brain concn. Thus, there is a lack of correlation in the development of NAA and NAAG levels and NAAG is localized in a cell system that matures early.
