DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Reinforced polyolefins having excellent impact strength comprise (A) an ethylene-propylene block copolymer (I) grafted with an unsatd. carboxylic acid anhydride in the presence of a radical initiator, (B) optionally unmodified polyolefin, (C) a filler, and optionally (D) MgO. The unsatd. carboxylic acid anhydride content was 0.001-2% in the A component and >0.001% in A + B. The A component had a continuous-disperse phase heterogeneous structure, in which the main component of the continuous phase was cryst. propylene polymer and the main component of the disperse phase is ethylene-propylene random copolymer (20-90% ethylene), and the continuous/disperse phase ratio was (55-95):(5-45), with the av. particle diam. (dw) of the disperse phase being 0.5-10 m. The intrinsic viscosity ([h]1) of the continuous phase-forming cryst. propylene polymer in the block copolymer to be grafted was 1-5 and that ([h]2) of the disperse phase-forming random copolymer 2-10, with the latter being larger than the former. Thus, I (melt index 2 g/10 min, die swell 1.55, [h]1 1.6, [h]2 5.2, continuous/disperse phase ratio , ethylene content in disperse phase 50%) 100, powd. maleic anhydride (II) 0.7, and tert-Bu perlaurate 0.5 part were melt-blended at 220° for 1 min in an extruder and extrusion-pelletized to give graft polymer (III) [31069-12-2] with melt index 25 g/10 min, die swell 1.89, and II content 0.24%. III 15, cryst. polypropylene [9003-07-0] (melt index 8 g/10 min) 55, aminosilane-treated glass fiber (diam. 10 m, length 6 mm) 30, Irganox 1010 0.2, Ca stearate 0.05, and MgO 2 parts were blended at 230° and injection-molded at 230° to give a specimen with dw 2.4 m, melt index 3 g/10 min, notched Izod impact strength 12 and 8 kg-cm/cm2 at +20° and -30°, resp., falling-ball impact strength (200 g) 15 cm, tensile strength 1200 kg/cm2, bending strength 1300 kg/cm2, bending modulus 5900 kg/cm2, heat distortion temp. 155°, and warp 3%.
