- Phase transfer-catalyzed reaction between chloromethylated poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) and the superoxide radical anion. Kolarz, Bozena N.; Rapak, Andrzej (Inst. Org. Polym. Technol., Tech. Univ., Wroclaw 50-370, Pol.). Makromol. Chem., 185(12), 2511-16 (English) 1984. CODEN: MACEAK. ISSN: 0025-116X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) The reaction of chloromethylated 1:99 divinylbenzene-styrene copolymer with KO2 in the presence of phase-transfer catalysts was studied. In di-Me sulfoxide and in the presence of 18-crown-6 [17455-13-9], the hydroxymethylated polymer was the main product with a yield of 45%. In DMF the transformation of chloromethyl groups was highest, but only 60% of alc. groups were present in the product. In benzene the transformation was only 25%. With Bu4NI [311-28-4] as catalyst in a mixt. of solvents, the transformation of chloromethyl groups proceeded with 85% yield and the product contained 80% hydroxyl groups.
- The effect of salts and pH on the conformation of quaternary ammonium electrolytes in aqueous solution
- The effect of salts and pH on the conformation of quaternary ammonium electrolytes in aqueous solution. Petrariu, Ioan; Steinbaum, Lucian; Petrariu, Pamfilia (Rom.). Rev. Chim. (Bucharest), 28(10), 932-6 (Romanian) 1977. CODEN: RCBUAU. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) The reduced viscosity of aq. solns. of quaternary ammonium polyelectrolytes, prepd. by chloromethylation and amination of polystyrene (I), decreased with increasing concn. due to changes in the nature of bonding and increased mol. mobility. The polyelectrolytes were prepd. by chloromethylation of I, amination with (2-hydroxyethyl)dimethylamine, and, in 1 case, subsequent chlorination of the hydroxyethyl group by treatment with SOCl2. Viscosity measurements were made at 0.10-1.0% concn. in water and in NaCl, NaOH, and HCl solns. (0.005-0.1, 0.1-1.0, and 0.01-0.1N resp.) at 25, 50, and 75°. The reduced viscosity was always lower in the presence of electrolyte solns. and showed the same tendency to increase with decreasing concn., but to a lesser extent than in water. Bu4NI [311-28-4] and Me3PhNI [98-04-4] solns. were used as model compds.
