(FC-43 [311-89-7]), a markedly greater recovery of contractile function was obsd. in ischemic isolated rabbit hearts compared with blood-reperfused hearts. This recovery of function was accomplished with only 1 h of perfluorochem. reperfusion and was not lost on returning to blood perfusion. The improved recovery of function could not be attributed to the chem. compn., O-carrying capacity, pH, or temp. of the perfluorochem. perfusate. Neither could the beneficial effects of the perfluorochem. be related to differences in left ventricular resting pressure. Because of the marked differences in coronary resistance during reperfusion with the perfluorochem. soln. compared with blood, the improved recovery of cardiac function may be related to the superior rheol. properties of the perfluorochem.
