DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Stepwise esterification of pyromellitic dianhydride with the individual (butanol, hexanol, 2-ethylhexanol) and mixed (C8-10) alcs. was studied with the intention to produce effective thermally stable nonvolatile polymer plasticizers. 3126-80-5 and 29484-08-0 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. The effect of catalyst compn. on the product yield was studied for sulfuric acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, and tetrabutoxytitanate. Temp. effect and effect of alc. access on the reaction rate were also investigated. The optimum anhydride-alc. concn. is 1:8 for acid catalysts and 1:10 for tetrabutoxytitanate. Tetra(2-ethylhexyl)pyromellitate and the mixed alc. tetraester are promising as plasticizers. .

Extruding 100 parts the pellets and 5.3 part octyl pyromellitate (I) and injection molding gave test pieces with shore D hardness 35 and elongation 750%, vs. 36 and 680, resp., with triethylene glycol dibenzoate in place of I. .
