DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Mebendazole [31431-39-7] and flubendazole [31430-15-6], administered in the food at 500 ppm for 14 consecutive days, had a marked effect on 1-yr-old hydatid cysts of Echinococcus granulosus in mice infested with protoscolices of human origin. In both treated groups, most of the cysts were collapsed, compared with none in the controls. A small no. of apparently viable cysts was obsd. in both mebendazole- and flubendazole-treated mice. Histol. examn. of collapsed cysts revealed necrosis and limited inflammatory infiltration, but in 1 intact cyst a normal germinal layer was present. The body-wt. decrease of the treated mice, as the cysts collapsed, was interpreted as an excellent indicator of drug efficacy. No drug-related side effects were obsd.
