DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) Potassium hyaluronate [31799-91-4] and potassium chondroitin-4-sulfate [62996-11-6] produced an unspecific and reversible aggregation and adhesion of rabbit erythrocytes in physiol. soln., an effect related to the ability of the glycans to form complex structures (osmotic cell and mol. sieve type) in soln. and thereby to conc. the displaced erythrocytes in a limited vol. Heparin fractions incapable of forming similar structures did not aggregate the erythrocytes but prevented the aggregating effect of the glycans if their concns. were insufficient to induce complete erythrocyte aggregation. The aggregating action of the glycans apparently is a universal biol. function of these compds., expressed not only toward the erythrocytes but also toward other cells and tissue elements.
