DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Neopentyl bromide [630-17-1] and pentaerythrityl tetrachloride [3228-99-7] were nonmutagenic to 7 strains of Salmonella typhimurium. These inactivities are reflected in the inability of either compd. to produce a color reaction in the chem. alkylation test of J. Epstein et al. (1955). Apparently, the lack of biol. reactivity of these 2 alkyl halides is due to steric crowding of the halogen group. These findings are significant within the context of the potent mutagenicity of monohaloalkanes in general. The similarity between the odor of pentaerythrityl tetrachloride and camphor is discussed.
