Collagen, in which the lysine residues were blocked with trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid [2508-19-2], swelled in the same extent as the control collagen, whereas a sample depolymd. with semicarbazide [57-56-7] had a higher swelling capacity. In the prepn. of modified collagen, the swelling ability was controlled by means of 4 bifunctional reagents: the vinylsulfone dye Remazol Black B [17095-24-8], difluorodinitrobenzene [327-92-4], C(NO2)4 [509-14-8], and K4Fe(CN)6 [13943-58-3].

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) The bifunctional fluorinated nitrobenzenes, 1,5-difluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (I) [327-92-4] and 4,4'-difluoro-3,3'-dinitrodiphenyl sulfone (II) [312-30-1], and the monofunctional 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (III) [70-34-8] inhibit chemotaxis, phagocytosis, exocytosis and the respiratory burst of rabbit polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Inhibition occurs in the micromolar concn. range; the bifunctional compds. are stronger inhibitors than the monofunctional one. The inhibitory effect can be counteracted by sulfhydryl compds. but not with NH2-group contg. compds. The results suggest that an interaction with vulnerable sulfhydryl groups, located in the hydrophobic surrounding, is the basis of the inhibitory effect of the fluorinated nitrobenzenes.
