DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Chronic administration of Li (1, 2, or 3 milliequiv/kg i.p. for 14 days) to rats increased the concn. of GABA [56-12-2] and aspartic acid [56-84-8] in the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brain stem. Glycine [56-40-6] was elevated in the cerebrum, while glutamate [56-86-0] was reduced in the brain stem with 2 and 3 milliequiv Li/kg. Taurine was unaffected in response to all the chronic doses of Li. Acute Li (5 milliequiv/kg, 2 injections) administration did not produce any significant changes in the regional levels of amino acids. Chronic Li administration reduced pyruvate [127-17-3], while increasing a-ketoglutarate [328-50-7] and oxaloacetate [328-42-7] in all the brain regions studied. Acute Li elevated a-ketoglutaric acid in the cerebrum and oxaloacetate in the brain stem, whereas a redn. in pyruvate was obsd. in all the regions of brain. Activation of glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase [9000-97-9] was seen in chronic as well as in vitro expts. However, no significant change could be detected in the activity of glutamate-pyruvate transaminase [9000-86-6] in vivo or in vitro. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) In rats with alloxan-induced diabetes, treatment with glibenclamide [10238-21-8] (0.5 mg/kg, once a day, orally) and oxaloacetate [328-42-7] (1 gm/kg, 2 times a day, orally) decreased the blood glucose levels to normal and lowered the blood levels of ketone bodies, but did not affect the hyperlipidemia. Although the serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase activity was increased by drug treatment, the serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase activity was not affected. However, drug treatment increased the liver glycogen [9005-79-2] content. The effect of glibenclamide and oxaloacetate on blood glucose was weaker than that of insulin [9004-10-8], whereas the effects of the 2 agents on blood ketone bodies and liver glycogen levels were greater than those of insulin. .
