DOCUMENT TYPE: Conference CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) Clindamycin [18323-44-9] was the most active of the tested agents against Bacteroides, followed by the nitroimidazole compds. tinidazole [19387-91-8], nimorazole [6506-37-2], and metronidazole [443-48-1]. The min. inhibitory concns. of these drugs were increased by increasing inoculum size, and the min. bactericidal concns. were influenced by the presence of serum. Spectinomycin [1695-77-8] was less active, but was also less affected by inoculum size and serum. It is possible to obtain blood levels of these compds. well above the min. inhibitory concns., suggesting that they may be clin. valuable in the treatment of Bacteroides infections. Mecillinam [32887-01-7], cefazolin [25953-19-9], and cephaloridine [50-59-9] did not appear to have a useful degree of activity. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Section cross-reference(s): 10 Synergy between a 2:1 combination of ampicillin [69-53-4] and amdinocillin [32887-01-7] was studied with 10 urinary isolates of Enterobacteriaceae. Synergy was obsd. with 6 organisms in a bladder model that reproduced many features of the milieu of the human bladder. Antibiotic susceptibility of these organisms was also detd. by the agar incorporation plate method, by tube diln. (urine and broth), microtiter method (urine and broth) and disk susceptibility test. Minimal inhibitory concns. of individual antibiotics were of no value in predicting the synergistic response and were sometimes misleading. None of the lab. tests could predict synergy in the bladder model. Evidence is available that the bladder model may be superior to other in vitro tests for synergy studies.
