APPLICATION: EP 83-101694 22 Feb 1983. PRIORITY: US 82-354589 3 Mar 1982. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 52 (Electrochemical, Radiational, and Thermal Energy Technology) A battery plate is made by loading a supporting porous metallic plaque with an electrode paste of NiCO3, a Co additive, sufficient water to form a paste, and optionally a deflocculant. Thus, a paste was prepd. from NiCO3 95, CoCO3 5, water 85, and aq. 25% Darvan 7 [54193-36-1] 9 g. The paste was rolled into a 90% porous 1-in.2 Ni-plated fiber metal plaque and dried. An alk. Fe battery with the NiCo3-pasted cathode was prepd. Charging of the cathode was initially at 20 mA/in.2 for 48 h, followed by a booster charge of 160 mA/in.2 for 4 h. Discharge was at 160 mA/in.2. After 50 cycles the cathode had a thickness (t) of 0.097 in., showing an insignificant increase over its initial t of 0.096 in. Electrodes of the invention retained theor. output of ~0.26 A-h/g for 25-38 cycles. Output of electrodes without Co additive dropped to <0.20 A-h/g NiCO3. .
