Studies were conducted to det. the optimum bath compns. for anodizing Al in isopropanolamine alk. baths involving ammonium fluoride and org. acid salts [HCOONH4, MeCOONH4, (NH4)2C2O4, (NH4)2C4H4O6, (NH4)3C6H5O7, (CH2)4(COON4)2]. Uniform films were formed when anodizing in baths contg. org. acid salts, but non-uniform films were formed in baths without these additives. The thickest film (about 8 mm) was formed in a bath contg. ammonium acetate and ammonium tartrate by anodizing for 30 min at 20° and c.d. 1 A/dm2. Films formed in baths contg. ammonium tartrate or triammonium citrate were the hardest (Marten's scratch hardness test, load 50 g, about 19) while films formed in baths contg. triammonium citrate or ammonium adipate showed lower corrosion resistance. SEM observation found that films prepd. in baths contg. monocarboxylic acid salts had a few pores about 25-40 nm in diam. in addn. to those with diams. of 15-20 nm, while these prepd. in baths contg. other org. acid salts had pores about with diams. of 30-40 nm. .
