A variable loss of fluorescent indicator was obsd. when fluorescent plates were used, resulting in failure to detect substances with lower Rf values. Spot detection was performed in a dark room laying plates on a pad of typewriting paper and detecting fluorescence with a 365 nm UV lamp. The incident long wave UV, transmitted through the silica gel plate, elicits a blue fluorescence (440 nm) from the paper. CHCl3-Me2CO-HCO2H (9:2:1) was used as the solvent system.
