- Response of live oak (Quercus virginiana) and understory vegetation to herbicides. Meyer, Robert E.; Bovey, Rodney W.; Bouse, L. Fred; Carlton, James B. (Dep. Range Sci., Texas A and M Univ., College Station, TX 77843, USA). Weed Sci., 31(5), 639-47 (English) 1983. CODEN: WEESA6. ISSN: 0043-1745. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Live oak (Q. virginiana) on the Texas Coastal Prairie was treated with herbicides using ground and aerial application methods. Tebuthiuron [34014-18-1] and pellets of buthidazole (I) [55511-98-3] at 2.Several substances with their cas registry numbers 64700-56-7 and 30043-49-3 may be metioned in this study.2 kg/ha were the most effective herbicides, killing 60-95% of the live oak. Tebuthiuron pellets 3.2 mm in diam were more effective than the wettable powder at 1.1 kg/ha. Bay Met 1486 [30043-49-3], Dowco 290 [1702-17-6], hexazinone [51235-04-2], and picloram K salt [2545-60-0] reduced the live oak canopy at 2.2 kg/ha, whereas 2,4,5-T propylene glycol Bu ether ester [88056-41-1] and triclopyr triethylamine salt [57213-69-1] and triclopyr ethylene glycol Bu ether ester [64700-56-7] were ineffective. Foliage-active herbicides generally were most effective in reducing the live oak canopy during the year of application. The soil-active herbicides generally were most active 1 or 2 yr after herbicide application. All herbicides reduced live oak cover sufficiently to allow an increase in grass cover 2-4 mo after treatment. Tebuthiuron at 2.2 kg/ha maintained a high degree of grass cover at least 2 or 3 yr after treatment. .

- Differential grazing use of herbicide-treated areas by cattle. Scifres, C. J.; Scifres, J. R.; Kothmann, M. M. 94-75-7 and 1918-02-1 are cas registry numbers. These chemicals are also mentioned in this article. (Texas A and M Univ., College Station, TX 77843, USA). J. Range Manage., 36(1), 65-9 (English) 1983. CODEN: JRMGAQ. ISSN: 0022-409X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Section cross-reference(s): 18 Cows allowed free access to randomly placed plots of Bell rhodesgrass, kleingrass, and weeping lovegrass prefered to graze plots treated with 2.2 or 4.4 kg/ha) of 20% tebuthiuron (I) [34014-18-1] pellets compared to untreated plots, regardless of grass species. The apparent preference was obsd. during the summer and fall following I application in the spring but was not detected the growing season 1 yr after I application. The cows also prefered herbicide-treated 2,4-D [94-75-7] or picloram [1918-02-1] sprays at 1 kg/ha, I pellets at 0.5, 1 or 25 kg/ha) little bluestem-brownseed paspalum native stands to untreated plots. Moreover, cows usually grazed on plots treated with 1 or 2 kg/ha of I more than on those plots treated with 2,4-D or picloram sprays. Since all plots were mowed prior to the grazing trials, apparent grazing preferences were not attributable to differences in stage of grass maturity or to control of broadleaves by the herbicides. .
