The mesophase had a structure comparable to that of nematic liq. crystals; zones within the mesophase of width 30 nm had planar mols. with a preferred orientation; the arom. mols. are apparently larger than those in corresponding cokes from vitrinites; the mesophase size could be related to ease of prodn. of suitably shaped mols. from parent substances; the mesophase growth and C structure may be affected by imperfections in the constituent lamellae of hexagonal rings.
