DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Broiler chicks were fed normally for 21 days, then starved overnight and given a single oral dose of an aq. soln. of diammonium hydrogen citrate (DAHC) [3012-65-5], triammonium citrate (TAC) [3458-72-8], ammonium lactate (AL) [515-98-0] or urea [57-13-6] equiv. to 24.76 mg N. Controls were given water. The concns. of free amino acids in the plasma were measured 2, 4, or 6 h after dosing. The only nonessential amino acid significantly affected was glutamine, which increased in chicks given DAHC or TAC. In another expt., nonprotein N (NPN) from the same sources was given at dosages of 124 mg N/chick. The concns. of free amino acids in the plasma and liver were detd. 2, 4, or 6 h after dosing. NPN from all sources increased the amt. of glutamic acid and glutamine in both tissues, although the response to urea was delayed. The concns. of plasma aspartic acid, plasma alanine, and liver aspartic acid also increased. The results are discussed in relation to earlier studies with liver homogenates in vitro.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Two expts. were conducted using Single Comb White Leghorn hens to study the utilization of nonprotein N (NPN) compds. in layers. Fourteen treatments were used over an 8-week period in expt. 1 and 11 treatments were used for a 12-week period in expt. 2. Triammonium citrate [3458-72-8] significantly depressed the performance criteria as compared to urea [57-13-6]. High energy rations and molasses addn. were of no use in the utilization of urea. In low producing flocks (.apprx.50%), urea can be used to replace 20% of crude protein of ration without any deleterious effects; however, high producing flocks (.apprx.65%) showed depression in performance criteria even at 10% replacement of crude protein by urea.
