DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) Methylsilatrane [2288-13-3], ethoxysilatrane [3463-21-6], and chloromethylsilatrane [42003-39-4] stimulated total protein synthesis and collagen synthesis in cartilage tissue from chick embryos. Methylsilatrane was the most effective with respect to total protein synthesis. Collagen synthesis, as measured by formation of peptide-bound hydroxyproline-14C from proline-14C in the incubation medium, was most strongly stimulated by all 3 silatrane derivs. at 3 .times. 10-3M concn. with a 180-min incubation period. The silatranes did not affect collagen proline hydroxylase activity, indicating their effect on collage formation is an indirect one involving the protein-synthesizing app. of the cell.

Chem., enhanced silkworm growth. Isomigugen (1-ethoxy-3,7,10-trimethylsilatrane) [18051-99-5] increased the total wt. of female and male cocoons by 18.3 and 4.2%, resp., the wt. of the silk coating by 127.1 and 113.7%, and the wt. of pupae by 16 and 1.9%, resp. Migugen [3463-21-6] also increased the silk yield in a sex-dependent manner, without increasing the pupal wt. Mival thiuronium salt was effective only in the lowest dose, because its S odor discouraged feed intake. The results confirm the essential role of Si in the animal metab. and the specific action of silatranes on the protein metab.
